      Introduction

Fast-moving targets create problems that higher resolution alone cannot solve. If the object changes position significantly between frames, the camera needs both an appropriate shutter architecture and enough frame rate to capture the motion clearly.

This 1.3MP USB camera module combines a Global Shutter sensor with high-speed MJPEG output, supporting up to 640×480@480fps, 1280×720@270fps and 1280×1024@190fps.

Unlike a network IPC camera, the module connects directly through USB 2.0 and UVC, providing a more straightforward integration path for PCs and embedded hosts used in machine vision, motion observation and high-speed image capture.

      Applications in Real Devices

      High-Speed Motion Analysis

Mechanical parts, rotating components or moving products may travel too far between conventional 30fps frames.

Higher frame rates provide more image samples during the same movement period, helping the system observe short-duration events and motion sequences more effectively.

      Machine Vision Equipment

Production systems may need to detect position, movement or object state while targets are moving.

Global Shutter exposure helps avoid the geometric deformation associated with line-by-line rolling exposure when motion is significant.

      Automated Production Monitoring

Fast production processes can contain events that occur too quickly for standard video.

The camera can operate at different resolution and frame-rate combinations depending on whether the project prioritizes image detail or temporal resolution.

      Laboratory and Motion Observation Devices

For equipment used to observe repeated motion, mechanical response or rapid changes in object position, the USB architecture provides a direct connection to a host computer for image acquisition and analysis.

      Project Evaluation Guide

      Consider This Model When

      • Global Shutter is required for moving targets.
      • Standard 30fps video is not fast enough.
      • High-speed USB image acquisition is required.
      • 640×480@480fps is useful for very fast motion.
      • 1280×720@270fps provides a better detail/frame-rate balance.
      • 1280×1024@190fps is preferred when higher spatial detail is required.
      • USB 2.0 and UVC match the host platform.
      • A 38×38mm PCB fits the mechanical structure.
      • Different lens FOVs may need to be evaluated.

      Confirm Before Sampling

      • Target speed.
      • Motion direction.
      • Smallest feature that must remain visible.
      • Required frame rate.
      • Required resolution.
      • MJPEG or YUY2 output mode.
      • Host USB bandwidth.
      • Required FOV and lens focal length.
      • Working distance.
      • Exposure and illumination conditions.
      • Available PCB and lens space.

Choosing This Model Within the Global Shutter Camera Module Series

      • Choose this model when the project needs high-speed image acquisition through a standard USB host.
      • Its key advantage is the combination of:
      • Global Shutter + High Frame Rate + USB UVC
      • rather than resolution alone.
      • Compared with SF1.3A142GS-N, both products are designed around high-speed imaging, but the system architectures are different:
      • SF1.3A142-GS-USB → direct USB UVC connection to the host.
      • SF1.3A142GS-N → embedded IPC architecture with H.264, RTSP, Ethernet and local processing.
      • The USB version is therefore more appropriate when the PC or embedded host performs the main acquisition and analysis, while the IPC version is more suitable when network streaming and standalone video processing are required.

      Resolution and Frame Rate

The operating mode can be evaluated according to target speed and required detail. Higher frame rate can be prioritized for rapid motion, while higher resolution can be selected when more pixels on the target are required.

      Lens and Field of View

Lens focal length can be selected according to the working distance, target dimensions and motion area. Wide and narrow lens options can be evaluated without changing the basic USB camera platform.

      Focus and Working Distance

Fixed Focus configuration can be adjusted according to the actual camera-to-target distance and required depth of field.

      USB and Mechanical Integration

USB connector, cable length, PCB mounting and host compatibility can be reviewed according to the final equipment structure and acquisition software.

Final configuration should be validated with the actual host platform, enclosure, optics, software, and lighting environment before sampling.

      FAQ

Why use Global Shutter for a moving target?

Global Shutter captures the image frame at the same exposure moment.

This helps reduce motion-related geometric deformation when the target or camera moves quickly.

When should I use 480fps instead of 190fps?

Use the higher frame rate when the event changes very quickly and temporal detail matters more than image resolution.

If the system needs more spatial detail, 1280×1024@190fps may provide a better balance.

Why is 1280×720 listed at 270fps while 1280×1024 is 190fps?

Higher image resolution requires more data per frame.

Reducing the number of pixels allows the camera to transmit more frames within the same time period.

Why is YUY2 much slower than MJPEG?

YUY2 transmits substantially more uncompressed image data.

MJPEG compresses each frame, reducing USB bandwidth requirements and enabling higher frame rates.

Can any PC achieve the maximum listed frame rate?

      Not automatically.

Actual performance depends on USB controller bandwidth, host hardware, operating system, software acquisition method and other devices sharing the USB bus.

How should I choose the lens?

Start with target size, working distance and required field width.

A wider lens captures more of the motion area, while a longer focal length makes the target occupy more pixels in the image.
